5 Tips on Caring For Your Prescription Motorcycle Riding Glasses

Like owning conventional glasses that you wear on an everyday basis, whether it’s to read a book, go to work, or study at school, prescription motorcycle riding glasses must be treated in a similar manner. You wouldn’t treat your regular glasses carelessly so it’s safe to say that you wouldn’t (or at least shouldn’t) do that with your motorcycle riding glasses. In order to preserve the life of your motorcycle riding glasses and get the most use out of them possible, it is important to take care of them properly. In this post, we will uncover five helpful tips that will making caring for your prescription motorcycle riding glasses easier.

  1. Take Care of Scratches: Scratches aren’t just bad for your prescription motorcycle riding glasses, they are actually extremely dangerous and put your safety at risk when riding. If your prescription motorcycle riding glasses have scratches, they will obscure your vision and make it more difficult for you to see the road and your surroundings clearly when riding. Regularly check your prescription motorcycle riding glasses for scratches and take care of them before getting back on your bike. Fortunately, there are few ways that you can take care of scratches on your glasses before taking them to a repair professional. First, take a small dab of toothpaste and rub it in circles on your glasses. After thoroughly rubbing the toothpaste in, wash the lenses with warm water. After the glasses are completely rinsed, dry them with a lint-free cloth. Repeat this several times, if needed. Another way to get rid of scratches on your lenses is by applying a baking soda paste. To do this, combine baking soda and water; you want the combination to be quite thick. Rub this concoction on your lenses in a circular motion for at least one minute. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth. Lastly, you can use vehicle wax to get rid of scratches on your prescription motorcycle riding glasses. By using a very small amount of the wax you can carefully wipe your lenses. Instead of rinsing the wax off, gently wipe off any excess from the lenses.
  2. Check The Screws: It isn’t uncommon for motorcycle riders with prescription glasses to lose screws in the frames. To prevent this from happening, regularly check the screws. If any appear to be loose, tighten them with a screwdriver. If any screws are missing, check with the manufacturers of the glasses to get the right size screw replacements. Riding without screws can be a serious road hazard, so get in the habit of checking your frames routinely to make sure all is as it should be.
  3. Keep Your Lenses Clean: Anyone who wears glasses, for riding or any other activity, knows how easily the lenses can become dirty and smudged. And when you are riding on a regular basis, your glasses are substantially more likely to get even dirtier from debris and other elements. Keep your riding glasses clean so you can see clearly without any obstructions. If you have done a sufficient amount of riding, you know that reaching for the nearest cloth to quickly wipe them off just doesn’t cut it anymore. And many people make the mistake of spritzing some window cleaner on their lenses, which is not something that you want to do. While it might seem like the best option, it can actually cause more problems. Most prescription motorcycle riding glasses have a special coating on the lenses and window cleaner has a tendency to eat away at that protective coating. Ditch the window cleaner and instead opt for some dish soap. Using a small amount of dish soap will get your motorcycle riding glasses squeaky clean and won’t leave behind any smudges or streaks. After thoroughly washing, gently dry your glasses with a lint-free cloth. This is the safest way to keep your glasses totally clean without harming the coating on them.
  4. Don’t Forget to Polish Them Too: Polishing prescription riding glasses isn’t as much of a priority for motorcycle owners. But doing it occasionally is an important part of preserving the life and durability of your glasses. Polish your riding glasses with a small amount of polish and a lint-free cloth. Make sure not to use something like a paper towel to polish your glasses since this is considered an abrasive material. And of course, abrasive materials can often create scratches in your lenses which makes your riding less safe.
  5. Wear Them The Right Away: Not only is wearing your prescription motorcycle riding glasses the wrong way an example of poor care and use, it is extremely dangerous. If your glasses aren’t securely on your face while riding, they could fall off and leave you in a very bad position on the road. In order to ensure your safety on the road and care for your glasses properly, take the necessary steps to securely fasten them. Many prescription riding glasses come with straps and wraparounds. Wearing a strap will ensure that your glasses are tightly sitting on your face and will not slip down your nose. Something as simple as wearing a strap could make your riding more comfortable and potentially save your life and keep the lives of others on the road safer as well.
